Tick protection is worth planning before the season is already underway. The main questions are which animal is being treated, how the product is given, and whether the dose matches the animal's weight and species.

Why tick protection matters#

Ticks are common in many parts of Finland during the warmer months. For pets that spend time outdoors, tick protection can reduce the number of ticks that attach and make tick checks easier to manage.

Protection is not only about the medicine. Regular checking of the coat and skin is still part of the routine.

Choose by species and weight#

Dog and cat products are not interchangeable. A product intended for dogs should not automatically be used on cats, and the other way around is just as unsafe. The right choice also depends on weight, age, and whether the animal has other health problems.

That is why a simple name on the package is not enough. The intended use must fit the animal.

Anticipate how the product fits the routine#

Different products are given in different ways. Some are applied to the skin, while others are given by mouth. The best choice is usually the one that can be used correctly and repeatedly without confusion.

If a product is hard to apply or the animal resists it strongly, the routine often fails even if the product itself is suitable on paper.

Start before peak tick season#

Protection is easiest when it starts before ticks are already being found on every walk. A seasonal start date depends on local exposure and the animal's routine. In many homes, it is simpler to begin early than to chase the problem later.

Check for ticks anyway#

Even with protection, the coat should be checked after outdoor time. Pay special attention to the head, ears, neck, armpits, and groin area. Early removal matters because it lowers the chance of complications.

When to seek care#

Seek veterinary advice if you are unsure which product fits the animal, if the animal reacts badly after use, if the animal is very young or ill, or if the ticks keep appearing despite a proper routine. A product question is only part of the bigger health picture.
