Moving abroad is a big change, and medicines are easier to handle if you prepare before leaving. The main goal is continuity. You want the right medicines, the right information and a clear plan for the first weeks in the new country.

Before departure#

Ask for an up-to-date medicine list that shows the active substance, strength and dosage. Keep medicines in their original packages and carry the essential ones in hand luggage. If you use regular treatment, do not leave refills to the last moment.

Why the active substance matters#

Brand names change from country to country, but the active substance is the useful part of the list. If you know the active substance and strength, it is much easier to find a local equivalent and explain what you are using.

What to check in advance#

Some medicines are subject to tighter controls, so the destination country's rules matter. Check the local requirements early if you use a medicine that may need a certificate or special handling.

A small self-care kit helps in the first weeks#

A thermometer, plasters, basic wound-care supplies and a suitable pain medicine can make the first weeks simpler. If you already know that allergies or stomach bugs are likely for you, prepare only the items that genuinely fit your situation.

When to seek care#

Seek care if your medicine supply is running out and you have not arranged a continuation, if a new medicine causes side effects, or if your condition worsens after the move. If you have a chronic condition, it is better to contact care early than to wait until symptoms have clearly become harder to manage.
