Identify the main symptom first#

Digestive symptoms can look similar from the outside, but the best response depends on whether the main issue is burning, loose stool, constipation, gas, cramping, or a mix of several things. One blanket solution rarely fits all of them.

A small note about timing, food, pain, and bowel habits can reveal patterns that are easy to miss in the moment.

Common symptom patterns#

Heartburn often gets worse after large or fatty meals and when lying down. Constipation tends to improve with more fluid, more fibre, and regular movement. Diarrhoea makes fluid replacement the priority. Bloating often links to eating speed, certain foods, or bowel sensitivity.

When symptoms repeat, it is helpful to think in terms of pattern rather than one bad day.

Do not wait on warning signs#

Blood in the stool, severe or localised abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, clear dehydration, or unplanned weight loss are not routine stomach symptoms. They need assessment rather than another self care experiment.

If the problem changes shape over time or keeps coming back, the cause may be broader than ordinary indigestion.

When to seek care#

Seek care if symptoms are new and unusual, if they last longer than expected, if they get worse, or if there are warning signs such as blood, fever, weight loss, swallowing difficulty, or severe pain. Seek care quickly if you cannot drink enough or if the pain is intense.

A digestive complaint is worth checking when the pattern stops looking ordinary.
