An oily scalp can make hair look clean for only a short time and leave the roots flat sooner than expected. Sebum, genetics, washing rhythm, styling products and how often the scalp is touched can all play a part.

Regular washing often works better than harsh cleansing. A shampoo should remove oil without making the scalp feel stripped, and thorough rinsing matters because leftover product can make hair feel heavy and dull.

It helps to separate simple oiliness from oiliness with irritation. If the scalp is also itchy, sore or covered with thick flakes, a very strong cleanser can make the feeling worse rather than better.

If oiliness comes with pain, oozing, marked redness or sudden change, the problem should be checked. In Finland, that is especially sensible when the scalp issue does not behave like ordinary greasy hair.
