A pill cutter or pill crusher can make a daily routine easier, but only if the specific tablet is suitable for splitting or crushing in the first place. The most important check is the medicine, not the device.

Cutters suit tablets that are meant to be halved and easy to divide evenly. Crushers suit tablets that are allowed to be crushed for swallowing or administration. Modified-release, enteric-coated, very small or oddly shaped tablets, and some combination medicines are poor candidates for altering.

Practical design still matters. A cutter should hold the tablet steady and make a clean split. A crusher should be easy to twist, empty, and clean so the full dose is not lost and different medicines are not mixed together. If the tablet can no longer be taken whole, a different formulation may be safer than forcing the device to solve the problem.
