Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that are often chosen when the skin needs help with texture, uneven tone, or a more polished look. They are useful ingredients, but they are not the kind of product that usually works best when introduced quickly or alongside several other strong actives.
At the start, dryness, flaking, and mild stinging are common. That does not always mean the product is wrong, but it often means the skin needs a slower pace and a simpler routine around it. A rich moisturizer and fewer other actives usually make the difference between tolerable and too much.
Sunscreen is important here, because retinoid routines work better when the skin is not constantly exposed to extra UV stress. It is also sensible to keep the rest of the routine predictable while the skin adjusts.
If the skin is very sensitive, or if pregnancy or breastfeeding is relevant, the label and suitability should be checked carefully before use. Retinoids are effective enough that they deserve a cautious start.
