Lactic acid is another AHA acid used in exfoliating skin care. It is often chosen when the aim is a softer skin surface and a slightly more even look, but the skin does not tolerate stronger exfoliation very well.

As with most acids, a slow start is the safest approach. A mild tingling sensation can be normal, but clear stinging, strong redness, or flaking usually means the product is too strong or used too often. In that case, a break and better moisturizing are the smarter next steps.

Because exfoliation can make the skin more reactive to the sun, sunscreen matters here too. Many people prefer to use acid products in the evening and keep the morning routine calm and simple.

If the irritation is strong, blistering, or lasting too long, the product should be paused and the skin should be assessed.
