Folded gauze is one of the simplest wound-care basics. It can help with light cleaning, cushioning, pressure, or covering a small area before stronger fixation is added on top. That flexibility is the main reason it belongs in many first-aid setups.

The practical question is not whether gauze is advanced enough. It is whether the wound needs a simple absorbent layer or something more specialised. For a small fresh wound, gauze plus sensible fixation can be entirely sufficient.

If the wound is deep, leaking heavily, or repeatedly soaking through the cover, plain gauze may no longer be enough on its own. In that case, the wound and the dressing plan both deserve a closer look.
