Alginate dressings are usually considered when a wound produces more fluid and needs an absorbent dressing that still sits gently against the area. They are not the most natural choice for a dry scrape or a very small superficial wound.

The main question is how much fluid the wound produces and whether the dressing can be changed in a sensible way. If the wound is only slightly moist, a simpler dressing may be enough. If it is clearly wet, a product that absorbs and protects at the same time can make day-to-day care easier.

If the wound is deep, infected, foul-smelling, or linked to diabetes or circulation problems, dressing choice should not be left to shelf comparison alone. A wetter wound often deserves assessment as well as a suitable product.
