Constipation usually means hard stool, fewer bowel motions than usual and a feeling that the bowel is not emptying properly. It may be temporary, but it can also be a sign that something in the routine, diet or medicine list needs a second look. In Finland, iron tablets, pain medicines and low fluid intake are common reasons the pattern becomes harder to ignore.
What usually helps#
Fluids, movement and enough fibre are the basic tools. The bowel often responds better to steady habits than to a dramatic one-day fix. If your diet is very low in fibre, increasing it gradually is easier on the gut than changing everything at once, because a sudden jump can increase bloating.
Some people need a laxative for a short period. If that is the case, the product choice and dose should match the situation and the package instructions. Bulk-forming fibre is often used when the bowel is slow but open, whereas an osmotic laxative may be considered when a short-term softening effect is needed. Do not keep adding different products one after another without first checking whether the first one was used correctly.
If stools are hard and dry, the problem is often not a lack of effort but a lack of water, fibre or movement. If the abdomen is very swollen, the pain is strong or nausea is part of the picture, it is wiser to pause the self-care plan and check the cause. If the stool pattern changes together with bloating and cramps, Bloating and gas may help separate ordinary gut slowing from a broader bowel pattern.
Some medicines can slow the bowel, including opioids, iron, calcium, and some anticholinergic medicines. If constipation starts after a new medicine, that timing is useful information.
If constipation happens together with bloating, pain, or alternating loose and hard stools, irritable bowel syndrome or another gut condition may be part of the picture.
Common reasons constipation becomes persistent#
Low fluid intake, low activity, a small food intake, travel, stress and some medicines can all slow the bowel. In older adults, constipation is also more common and can be more stubborn. A regular toilet routine after breakfast, with the feet supported so the knees are slightly raised, can help the bowel empty more completely.
If the bowel habit has changed from your normal pattern and stays changed, it is worth asking why instead of just treating the symptom.
When to seek care#
Seek care if constipation is new and severe, if you have strong abdominal pain, vomiting, blood in the stool, or weight loss, or if you have not passed stool for a long time and feel unwell. A sudden change in bowel habit after age 50 deserves a lower threshold for assessment.
Seek care sooner if constipation keeps returning, if it started after a new medicine, or if you also have fever or a swollen abdomen. Do not keep trying fibre products if the abdomen is hard and the bowel seems blocked.
