Rosacea often shows up as redness in the centre of the face, a flushed feeling, visible small vessels or spots that are easy to confuse with acne. The skin may also sting or react strongly to heat, sun or skin care products.
What tends to worsen it#
Heat, sudden temperature changes, sunlight, hot drinks, alcohol and very spicy food often make symptoms worse. Strong cleansers, fragranced products and over-exfoliation can also keep the skin irritated.
What helps#
Keep the routine simple. Use lukewarm water, a mild cleanser and a fragrance-free moisturiser. Add sunscreen if the sun clearly worsens the redness.
It often helps to test one product at a time rather than changing several things at once. The skin gives better feedback that way.
Eyes can be part of the picture#
If the eyes are red, dry, irritated or sore, the same condition may be affecting the eye area as well. Eye symptoms deserve attention rather than being treated as a minor side issue.
When to seek care#
Seek care if the skin becomes painful, swollen or rapidly worse, or if the eyes are repeatedly red, sore, light-sensitive or vision changes. Also seek review if you are not sure whether the rash is rosacea or something else.
