The skin around the eyes is thin and often the first place where dryness or irritation becomes obvious. A separate eye cream can help if a regular face cream feels too heavy, stings or gets into the eyes.
When a separate product is useful#
If your usual face cream already feels fine around the eyes, a separate eye cream is optional rather than necessary. A simple, fragrance-free product is usually the safest place to start.
What to look for#
Choose a formula that is easy to apply, low in fragrance and not overly active. Hydrating ingredients and barrier-supporting ingredients usually make more sense than strong exfoliating products in this area.
How to use it#
Use a small amount and apply it gently on the bony area around the eye, not right at the lash line. Too much product can migrate into the eye and cause stinging.
When to seek care#
Seek care if the eyelid swells a lot, becomes painful, becomes very red, or if vision changes or light sensitivity appears. Repeated rash around the eyes may be contact dermatitis rather than simple dryness.
