Period pain, also called menstrual pain, is common, but it is not all the same. Some people have cramping for a day or two at the start of bleeding. Others have pain that begins before the period, lasts longer, or changes over time. Those differences matter when choosing self-care.

For mild and familiar cramps, heat and a suitable over-the-counter pain medicine may help. The leaflet still matters every time. Anti-inflammatory pain medicines are not suitable for everyone, and the choice should stay especially careful if there is stomach ulcer disease, kidney disease, regular medication, or any chance of pregnancy.

It also helps to notice the pattern. Pain that is predictable and responds to short-term self-care is different from pain that keeps getting worse, starts after years of painless periods, or comes with heavy bleeding, fever, or pain between periods.

Seek an assessment if pain relief does not work well enough, the cycle changes, bleeding becomes irregular or very heavy, or the pain feels different from your usual pattern.
