Melatonin is a hormone the body produces naturally in darkness. Melatonin products are usually considered when sleep timing has shifted for a clear reason, such as travel, irregular hours, or a delayed evening rhythm. It is not a universal answer to every kind of insomnia.
The most useful question is why melatonin is being considered in the first place. If the main issue is racing thoughts, pain, breathing disturbances, or repeated waking for unclear reasons, the product may be less relevant than the wider cause. In Finland, melatonin products may also belong either to the supplement range or the medicine range depending on the product, which makes the label and instructions worth reading carefully.
Keep the trial simple and the timing clear. Melatonin is easiest to judge when it is the only new sleep product in the routine and when the evening itself is reasonably calm. Grogginess the next day means the situation should be reassessed rather than pushed through.
Check suitability in advance if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking regular medication, or dealing with long-lasting sleep problems. Seek assessment if insomnia keeps going, if daytime tiredness is building, or if sleep is disturbed by loud snoring or suspected breathing pauses.
