Toothache is one of those pains that is hard to ignore. It may start as a dull ache, a sharp sensitivity or a throbbing pain that worsens at night. Home measures can ease the pain for a while, but the cause still needs to be sorted out.

What the pain pattern can tell you#

Sensitivity to cold or sweet food often points to a cavity or exposed tooth surface. A constant ache, pain when biting, or pain that wakes you at night usually means the problem needs assessment more quickly.

Swelling changes the picture. If the cheek, gum or jaw area starts to swell, the issue is no longer just discomfort. Self-care may help for a moment, but it does not replace treatment.

What you can do at home#

Pain medicine is often the first useful step. Follow the package instructions carefully and do not exceed the dose. Do not put pain medicine directly on the gum or tooth, because it can irritate the tissue.

If the cheek is swollen, a cold pack wrapped in a cloth can ease the pressure for short periods. A saltwater rinse may soothe irritated gums. Keep the mouth clean, but avoid harsh scrubbing.

If a filling has come loose or there is an open cavity, a temporary filling product can protect the tooth until you get to a dentist. That is a bridge, not a final fix.

What not to do#

Do not take two anti-inflammatory pain medicines at the same time. Do not heat a swollen cheek. Do not keep pressing the sore tooth to test whether it still hurts. Repeated checking usually makes the area more irritated.

When to seek care#

Seek urgent care if swelling increases quickly, if you have fever, trouble swallowing, difficulty breathing, or if the pain becomes unbearable. Seek care also if a tooth has been knocked out, if there is major facial trauma, or if the pain does not settle with self-care.
